The reader has to understand what Ivy does not all the subtle ways the people are communicating and the body language and turns of phrase. Whilst not a difficult read it contains a lot of inference which makes it more challenging. There is something a bit creepy about the Troofriend and yet as it is written in the first person by Ivy herself, it is also a story of growing awareness and self. It is also about relationships, both within the family and with friends. It touches upon what makes us human and whether androids could ever be considered sentient life. It is entirely different but an excellent and thought provoking read. Having really enjoyed The Middler by Kirsty Applebaum, I was looking forward to reading this one. But if that is the case, why does she covet Sarah’s belongings and why is she scared of the dark? Ivy is programmed to be the perfect friend for your child, she won’t lie, steal or bully programmed only for fun and goodness. Sarah would rather have a dog but instead she accepts the Troofriend, who she calls Ivy. It is not just any old android either but the Jensen and Jensen Troofriend 560 Mark IV. Sarah is not overjoyed when her busy parents get her an android to be her friend.

I still don’t understand why Clay wanted to become a werewolf, and why Malcolm bit him instead of just killing him. “Savage” traces Clay’s back story – how he was bitten, and became Jeremy’s “son”. I love these books’ intriguing plots, but the characters aren’t quite standing out as different from one another. But once she starred in her own novel, her distinguishing characteristics faded. The same with the female characters, though when we first met Jaime Vegas as a secondary character, she at least seemed to be drunken and clumsy. And when these are written in first person, it becomes even more obvious. I’ve read the Otherworld novels and short stories – Clay Danvers, Lucas Cortez and Jeremy all have very similar voices. Though Malcolm is a character you’ll want dead, or at the very least slapped, he at least has somewhat of a unique voice. The racist, unlikable Malcolm Danvers manages to attract a quiet Japanese lass, but she has a definite plan to keep the resulting baby from his father. “Ascension” is a fine short, focusing on Jeremy Danvers’s birth. Now they can only be found in this anthology, with the proceeds going to World Literacy of Canada. She makes boys thoughtful, introspective, able to apologize, and kind, and she makes girls the same. But she does make women strong and brave and curious, and she makes boys the same. It's subtle and moderate- Grimes doesn't 'queer' the configuration of femininity or masculinity- nothing is that drastic about her work. What's becoming one of my favorite attributes of Grimes' writing is her very natural play with gender norms. She's imaginative, playful, proactively willful, and strong, but she's also thoughtful and kind. But that's a little the point- Dyamonde is a little girl who sees and understands with empathy and wisdom uncommonly attributed to children. The tone and problem-solving of the protagonist Dyamonde (pronounced "Diamond") genuinely sounds like a young child's, albeit a bit more reformed than the typical elem. Grimes has a knack for writing in the voice of a child without sounding like an adult trying to do so. This advanced 2nd - beginner 4th grade book is really precious. The amount of essays, reviews, articles and academic papers, which have been written about this little story (60 pages on Kindle) is truly frightening. Personally, I would like to think that – similar to Murakami – there is no right or wrong the interpretation is entirely up to the individual reader. Kafka himself never revealed the deeper meaning. The novella from 1915 is still being debated and there are almost as many interpretations as there are readers. Haven’t we all wondered what our first thought would be if we woke up one morning and found ourselves transformed to an unidentified, beetle-like insect? No?Īnyway, that question is just one of the reasons you may want to read Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. A group of modern history buffs work for a secret organization who travels back in time to either correct any interference from criminals trying to alter the timeline or to study and learn the reasons why things happened (that we never really understood). It’s the first (except for a short prequel) in a series with ~10 books already (and it’s only been 3 or 4 years since the author started writing the series from what I can tell). So… trying to clear off my list of ARCs (I’ve got 11 left… almost there for my 5/31 deadline… and I punished myself by not allowing any new ones until these are done)… I slotted it for this week, and wow! It was such a surprise and fantastic read. I reasoned out that it had a cool premise where historians time travel to the past to see what happened, and well, that does kinda raise my interest. When I received the email, I looked the book up as I couldn’t remember anything about it… and for the life of me, I couldn’t understand why I picked it given it’s science fiction and fantasy.
